Character Information

Name: Nessa Dupree
Canon: Original
Age: 20
Canon Point: Current
Background/History: Nessa's youth was fairly normal, on a world where magic was real--at least, until her parents disappeared and she was taken into foster care. Her father had been a police officer, and he fell in the line of duty. This sent her mother into a spiral of mental illness, and she was institutionalized, which made a young Nessa a ward of the state, sent into foster care.

Her new set of parents cared only for how Nessa might improve their circumstances. They also viewed what magic they--and by extension their son and Nessa--had been given as gifts from God, and looked down upon her more secular endeavors. Nessa didn't trust their praying over her, but let it happen, mostly. She ignored or demurred her foster parents' attempts to dissuade her from music--until their biological son attempted to take advantage of her. Nessa was having none of that, and kicked him in the nuts when he tried. THeir parents Since she was a "harlot" in their eyes, they believed their son over Nessa and pressed charges. One assault case later, Nessa was absolved of wrongdoing and emancipated as a minor. "With magic so common on her world, Nessa's ability with it made her self-sufficient in the court's eyes, and she was emancipated rather than being pushed back into foster care for a couple years.

At first, she found surviving on the streets more than a bit awkward--there were still some social services available to her, and Nessa took them, though making actual friends and connecting to people? Nessa found that difficult, since she'd learned to not give her trust away so easily. She fought to gain a GED and keep her head above proverbial water, but she had a few talents--like her music. She found she enjoyed working on small machines, too, and would do minor repairs for others. Since then, she's been taking a variety of community college courses in an attempt to make something of herself. Spit in the eye of the fake parents who tried to keep her down.

Strengths:

Disciplined: Especially with music, Nessa is more likely to practice it, or do what she's supposed to do, instead of doing what she'd rather do. (Sleeping in is a good example, here. Everyone needs their beauty sleep, right?) She may not be the quickest mentally, or the smartest, but being disciplined will help keep her at pace with those classmates who are. She's never found it difficult to stay on task. Though she does rely a lot on her luck and raw talent to get by. She's quick to pick up the basics of book learning or a new skill she's shown, however, which has only helped her situation, and she's rarely a slacker.

Nessa tries to help people--despite being burnt by society as a whole in the past, she still attempts to be kind. She'd prefer to see people as a whole as good, not inherently bad. Her dad was in the bomb squad as a police officer, and died in the line of duty--he always tried to do the right thing, and help people. That is something that Nessa held on to in her father's memory, and she tries to follow in his footsteps there as best she can--do the right thing, and help people. At least, do what *she* thinks is the right thing. Despite everything, she cares very deeply about people. All people, not just the ones she's closest to. And while her foster parents never instilled this in her, they never managed to dissuade Nessa of this truth.

She isn't free of attitude entirely--Nessa is only a few years out from being a teenager--but she tends to roll with the punches rather than lash out or strike back when adversity rears its head. She tries to stay calm as best she can--cool heads are the things that tend to make one's actions prevail, right? Nessa will give herself an internal pep talk and try to keep things cool when things are rough. Still, she's only human, and sometimes the worry and the frustration break through, though that tends to make her apologetic after she cools off.

Weaknesses:

For all that Nessa cares about people, she's also guarded; she's seen them at their worst, as in the case of her foster family, and so she's not inclined to give over her trust easily. She doesn't necessarily put others to the test, but she's got an air of resignation, perhaps, where she's inclined to think she'll be let down and disappointed. Though in instances where she's thrown off-balance, she might let loose. Especially if the person comes off as guileless, or somehow they seem younger. She's less likely to openly trust an adult, as well, despite being one (or close to being one) herself.

Nessa can also be rather overprotective: because she has managed to take care of herself and make it in life despite a good deal of adversity, she can be more than a bit overzealous with taking care of other people -- especially those she perceives as less capable. Despite this, she is aware that it can make people angry at her--she might be doing it from a place of care, but that won't endear her to everyone, especially if the person is perfectly capable, themselves. (This isn't likely to stop her, though...)

Nessa is eager to learn, but at least currently, she's fairly directionless. She has no desire to follow in the footsteps of her policeman father or her homemaker mother--and the less said about her foster family, the better! She's dabbled in a lot of things--small machine repair, music, art writing, social work--but so far, only music has really stuck around in her deep level of interests. At home, she'd been doing some sessions work with people, but Nessa hadn't been advertising for a band to play in or anything like that, though it might have come in time.

Canon Powers/Abilities: Magic is a force into and of itself, there are just many lenses that the people of Nessa's world perceive it through. For some, it comes as naturally as breathing. For Nessa, it's not that easy-she's had to learn to direct it through her will, and using the form of music has also helped. She wouldn't call herself a bard, as she's not much for composing her own music. She sings spells with music from other musicians, though she's talented at playing instruments--drums, piano, and her favorite, the guitar. The effects can vary wildly, but she generally tries to form an idea in her mind and suit the song to the magic she wants to happen. At her current level of skill, she can only approximate up to 2nd level spells (going by Dungeons and Dragons). With healing as an example, Nessa can't regenerate lost limbs, and broken bones would take repeated applications of magic. Playing music regularly will not tire her out, but using music as spellsong would.

Nessa is no inventor, but she has some small skill in maintaining low level machinery, and she can use that skill to fix her guitar if it breaks, as well.

She has basic ability in first aid, like your average babysitter or Girl Scout. Girl Scouts is actually to thank for her basic survival skills--she can start a fire from raw materials, and has a generic basis on what kind of woodland/field plants are edible or medicinal. (Forget about the mushrooms, though.)

Inventory: The clothes on her back, her guitar, and a package of three bandanas. Hey, they're versatile!

Race

Nessa's race will be Other: Feline, she'll have tiger traits.
